Our House Drink... the Moscow Mule

The origin of our House Cocktail begins in the years following the Second World War when vodka was still relatively unknown in this country. John Martin, president of the Heublein distillery, was having a tough time promoting his new product, Smirnoff Vodka. As the story goes, he stopped off for dinner and drinks at the Cock n’ Bull in Hollywood, California, where his friend, owner Jack Morgan, was also struggling to sell his homemade Ginger Beer. Add to this situation another friend who had a truckload of copper cups to move, and you had a recipe for success.

Combine the three, add a fresh lime wedge, and the “Moscow Mule” was born. The Moscow Mule was the cocktail that kicked off the “white whiskey (i.e. Vodka) craze of the 1950’s and 60’s. Vodka became a mainstream spirit thanks to influential Hollywood stars and socialites who helped promote the Moscow Mule, one of the most popular cocktails of the era. Today the concoction has entered the “endangered species” list as it is rarely found in taverns and restaurants.

As our house cocktail, we serve the drink as it was intended, in authentic copper mugs, with the finest ginger beer to mix with your choice of vodka. Help reestablish the popularity of the Moscow Mule – try one today!

Martinis

Historians insist that the martini was invented in San Francisco by Jerry Thomas, a famous bartender at the Occidental Hotel, author of How to Mix Drinks. It is said that one morning, a customer came into the bar asking for a drink to cure his hangover.

Thomas decided to invent one, which he did with considerable care and gave it to the customer, who promptly recovered. The customer was traveling to Martinez, California. Thomas, learning of this, named the drink “Martinez.” It was indeed a forerunner of today’s Martini.

At Cassell’s Grille, we take pride in the preparation of our Martinis, so choose one and you’ll be sure to enjoy!
